Thursday 14 March 2019

Do you know an outstanding or inspiring young person that deserves recognition?

Don’t miss out on the chance to recognise their achievements by nominating them for a Mount Alexander Shire Youth Award. The closing date for nominations is midnight on Sunday 24 March.

“Our Youth Awards are open to anyone aged between 12 and 25 who live, work, study or play in Mount Alexander Shire,” said Shannon Lacy, Youth Development Officer, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“The awards are a great way to acknowledge the range of the achievements of young people in our community, as well as provide positive role models across six different categories,” she said.

The awards recognise and celebrate leadership in the workplace, music and the arts, sports and recreation, the community, environment or education.

Owen Shooter was recognised in 2015 and 2017 for his outstanding contribution to our community. Owen volunteered countless hours for various local organisations, advocated for environmental and social issues and organised fundraising events to support Relay for Life.

“To receive a Youth Award in an area that I am passionate about was such an honour,” said Owen.

“I have always loved completing projects that help others. Seeing the way they can help the community is so rewarding,” he said.

“The experience I got as a volunteer and the recognition from the awards has helped me to get a job in the community services field. I hope to continue working in roles that help the community.”

Nomination forms are available at the events section of www.mountalexandershireyouth.com.au or from the Civic Centre.

Winners will be announced at a free Youth Awards Festival at Victory Park in Castlemaine on Friday 5 April, as part of Victorian Youth Week celebrations. Winners will receive a certificate and prize valued at $100.

The award celebrations are a Council initiative, supported by the Victorian Government’s Youth Week Grants and will be held as part of Victorian Youth Week 2019.
