Residents and ratepayers in Mount Alexander Shire will soon be able to view council meetings from the comfort of their own home via a livestream on the internet.

Mount Alexander Council will trial a live stream video of the council meeting in March via YouTube. A link to the archive will be made available via Council’s website.

Mayor Bronwen Machin said the move aimed to increase transparency and remove access to barriers to attendance at the meeting.

“During a community survey last year we heard that local residents wanted more information about the Council decisions we make.

“We know the time, day and location of meetings can be a barrier that prevents some people from attending a council meeting.

“We hope a live stream and recording of council meetings will provide a timely update on the key decisions we make and share some insights on the reasons why.”

Mayor Machin said the organisation tested the technology in the lead up to the trial. The recording equipment will focus on Councillors and avoid filming the public gallery as much as possible. Any visitor to the public gallery should be aware their presence and voice may be recorded.

To view the live stream search for Mount Alexander Shire Council on YouTube. The council meeting will start at 6.30pm on Tuesday 19 March at the Civic Centre in Castlemaine. To view the council agenda visit our council meetings page.
