Children, families and residents of all ages are invited along to an afternoon of fun to help officially launch the new play space at Victory Park in Castlemaine during Children’s Week.

The centrally-located park is popular with local families and visitors and the new play space offers children of all ages an exciting place to play, learn and connect.

“Kids have been eyeing off the construction site for the last few months and we know they are keen to try out the wonderful new equipment,” said Phil Josipovic, Director Infrastructure and Development, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“The new district level play space has much to offer. We talked with lots of local children, families and community organisations like Nalderun and Windarring to ensure the play space meets everyone’s needs and reflects our rich Aboriginal cultural heritage.”

“It has climbing boulders, balance beams and log cars to play on, an accessible carousel and basket swings. We’re expecting to see many kids, teens and even adults lining up to use the flying fox or play ping pong,” he said.

The play space also includes a shadow wall featuring an indigenous design by the Nalderun group. There’s a grinding stone, yabby sculpture with Bunjil overhead on the shade sails.

The event is part of a special Children’s Week celebration held in conjunction with the Mount Alexander Early Years Forum and Seniors Festival.

“We’ll have Indigenous story-telling, face painting, free ice-cream and fruit, a circus workshop and hot dogs for sale,” said Mr Josipovic.

“It’s going to be a fun afternoon for all ages so bring the kids, grandchildren and friends.

“It’s also a chance to meet our newly formed Early Years Steering Group and speak with members about the recently developed early years plan.”

The fun starts at 4.00pm with activities running through to 7.00pm on Thursday 24 October at Victory Park, Mostyn Street, Castlemaine.

The play space was funded by Council with support from the Victorian Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund and Variety Club. Activities at the Children’s Week celebration are provided by Council with a grant from the Department of Education.
