Free green waste disposal reminder

Rake and grass clippings

Monday 28 October 2019

Don’t forget that residents and ratepayers in Mount Alexander Shire can take garden cuttings, grass clippings and other green waste to the Maldon and Castlemaine waste facilities for free from Saturday 26 October until Sunday 10 November.

Council is offering the annual free green waste disposal initiative to help residents prepare their property for the Fire Danger Period.

“We encourage everyone to make the most of this warmer weather and spend a few hours tidying up your garden and property,” said Glenn Brown, Municipal Fire Prevention Officer, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“Clear out your gutters, spruce up the yard and garden and if you’re on land make sure you have a clear fire break around your property,” said Mr Brown.

“We also urge you to let your neighbours know about the free green waste disposal period so we can work together and collectively reduce the risk of bushfire.”

Residents and ratepayers can drop off garden waste such as grass, sticks, branches and natural wood (less than 10cm diameter) during the waste facilities normal operating hours.

Green waste must be free of contaminants such as rubbish and declared noxious weeds, and emptied from plastic bags before being disposed.

Proof of residence in the shire will be required on entry. Normal green waste fees apply to businesses or residents acting on behalf of businesses.

Loads containing items other than green waste will be charged accordingly. Normal gate fees will apply before and after the 16 day period.

In partnership with the CFA, Council staff are inspecting properties and assessing for fire hazards against CFA guidelines. Inspections begin in the north of the shire and move south.

The team expects to have completed inspections by early December.
