Farmers can apply for the Land Management Rate and receive a 20 percent discount off the general property rate for undertaking approved environmental activities on their land.

The Land Management Rate (LMR) acknowledges the important work that many farmers are doing to manage their land in an environmentally sustainable way.

It is available to properties rated as a farm in the 2019/2020 financial year and are more than 20 hectares (49 acres) in size, or operate a farming business.

Successful applicants must show they are planning to undertake environmental protection works on their property over the next financial year (2020/21) over and above those required under State Government legislation.

Activities may include protecting remnant vegetation, fencing off waterways, establishing peren-nial pastures, controlling salinity or erosion or revegetating with local native plant species.

Letters were sent to eligible landowners in mid-December with an application form and guide-lines.

If your property was rated as LMR during the 2019/2020 financial year, your LMR status will roll over to the 2020/2021 financial year and you do not need to reapply at this time.

About 50 per cent of eligible properties in the shire currently receive the LMR each year.

Learn more about the LMR or complete the form online at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/LMR or phone Council on 5471 1700.

Applications close on Friday 14 February 2020.
