Council awards tender for bridge reconstruction

Pile of newspapers wrapped in string.

Mount Alexander Shire Council has awarded a one million dollar construction contract for the replacement of a bridge on Froomes Road in Castlemaine.

The project will see the construction of a new two lane concrete bridge to replace the single lane Froomes Road bridge.

The decision to demolish and replace the bridge was determined following an assessment which identified serious structural issues in February last year.

Vehicle load limits currently apply to the bridge, which may prevent fire tanker access on route to north-west Castlemaine in an emergency.

The contract was awarded VEC Civic Engineering Pty Ltd at a contract price of $1,018,000 (GST exclusive) at last week’s Ordinary Meeting of Council, following an open tender process.

Construction is expected later this year outside the fire danger period, following discussions with residents and after service relocations are complete.

This work is being undertaken as part of Council’s ongoing commitment to maintain our road and bridge network, and repair infrastructure in a timely manner.

The project will be part funded through the Federal Government’s Bridge Replacement Fund and Council’s capital works budget.

Council is responsible for managing more than 240 bridges and culverts, and more than 1,400km of roads across the shire.
