Mount Alexander Shire Council has awarded grants to 13 local events as part of the second round of its Events Grants Program.

The grants have been offered to support a variety of cultural, artistic, community and fun programs.

Events include the Victorian Museum and Galleries Forum, Castlemaine Billy Cart Challenge, Run the Maine, the Maldon Classic, the MAIN Game, Goods Shed Arts Launch, Australia Blues Day, Maldon and District Portrait Exhibition, World Circus and Cabaret Festival, the Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever, Castlemaine Coffee Cruise, Guildford Banjo Jamboree and Castlemaine and District Kennel Club Championship Show.

The events are planned for the latter part of the year, with organisers hoping they can go ahead if restrictions around social gatherings are lessened in coming months.

“Our shire has so many wonderful events and we are hopeful that these can continue to provide interest and colour for our community in the months ahead,” said Lisa Knight, Director Corporate and Community Services, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“Even though times have changed considerably since organisers applied for the grants, we wish to congratulate them on their successful application,” said Ms Knight.

“We realise restrictions to protect the health and safety of our community from coronavirus will continue to impact upcoming events.

“We will work closely with event organisers to see if changes need to be made to meet the requirements or if events need to be cancelled or postponed.

“In sharing the good news of the grants, we also wish to acknowledge the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the broader events sector.

“It’s been a difficult time for all event organisers and we can only imagine the disappointment they have felt to be unable to hold their much-loved events,” she said.

The next round of events grants is planned to open in July. To find out more about the grants programs visit www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/Grants or call the Venues and Events team on 5471 1700.
