Eagles Road bridge

Eagles Road Bridge - Current State

This project will replace the old bridge (pictured above) on Eagles Road in Harcourt with a new modern structure which will greatly improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians and allow for heavy vehicle access including unrestricted access for fire fighting vehicles.

Design considerations

The bridge has now reached the end of its useful life and will be replaced with a new modern structure that complies with today’s standards for road and bridge construction.

The improvements planned include the upgrade of the approaches to the bridge by realigning the road and improving the current surface, which has deteriorated.

The design includes a footpath on the eastern side of the bridge to improve pedestrian safety.

The proposed bridge will more than adequately provide for the increased use anticipated with the significant development planned in the area north of the bridge.

By constructing a bridge to current standards it is anticipated that the life of the bridge will be 80 to 100 years.

The current load limit on the bridge will also be removed.

Key areas of note

Safety barriers are included to replace the old unsafe guard rail. Crash terminals will also be placed at the end of the guard rail.

The length of the guard rail will be extended to reduce the possibility of vehicles entering the creek.

Sight lines will be improved at the Eagles Road and Bridge Street intersection through the removal of intrusive vegetation.

The road surface, alignment and approaches to the bridge will also be improved.

The waterway will be cleared and slightly widened to increase water capacity under the bridge and therefore help prevent flooding.

Rock beaching will be incorporated to help prevent erosion.
