Spotlight on community engagement

Share your feedback on Council’s revised Community Engagement Policy which has been updated to meet the requirements of the Local Government Act 2020. The policy outlines our commitment to community engagement, based on best practice principles to inform decision-making. Australia Day – Survival Day

Join us to acknowledge Australia Day on Tuesday 26 January. Attend an online dawn ceremony to mark Survival Day with the First Nations community from 6.00am. Meet Australia Day Award recipients and welcome our newest Australian citizens at a family-friendly event from 10.00am to 12.00noon in Victory Park in Castlemaine. Due to the pandemic, COVIDSafe measures will be in place and tickets are limited this year. Both events will be livestreamed. Bike workshops for year sevens

Council is partnering with Healthy Heart of Victoria and Bike Bendigo to deliver two bike workshops for students heading to high school. The workshops aim to encourage students to ride to school, build confidence and learn road rules. Sessions will be held from 10.00am to 2.00pm on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 January. Mental health support in your pocket

A handy new wallet card is available from local businesses and community hubs to support local residents to stay mentally well. The new resource includes tips on how to look after your mental health and wellbeing, and where to seek help if you or someone else you know needs it.
Pick up your card from the Civic Centre, Castlemaine Library, Castlemaine Community House, Maldon Neighbourhood Centre, Newstead Rural and Regional Transaction Centre, general stores and post offices. Download an e-version from www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/CASI.

Take the family on a story walk

Local children, families and carers are invited to share the wonder of reading together and take a ‘story walk’. Story walks are children’s picture books located on a path or trail in local parks and reserves. Council and the Goldfields Library have partnered to create five story walks in the shire. Have your say on recreation reserve

Don’t forget to provide your ideas and feedback on Campbells Creek Recreation Reserve before Friday 15 January. We want to know how you use the reserve, your favourite features and ideas for improvements to inform the development of a masterplan for the site. Complete an online survey via the Have your say section of our website.

Sale of unclaimed livestock

Council impounded three dorper cross ewes found in Maldon. If the sheep are not claimed and expenses paid by Friday 22 January, Council intends to sell the sheep by public action on Monday 25 January. For more information call our Local Laws team on 5471 1700.

Slow down on Golden Point Road

Council is reminding residents and visitors that a new seasonal speed limit of 40 km/hr is in place along a section of Golden Point Road near Expedition Pass Reservoir. The speed limit is in place from December to April each year to help improve safety for pedestrians and motorists.

School holiday program

Bookings are open for the YMCA Summer School Holiday Program. The program offers a range of activities for school aged children, and runs until Wednesday 27 January. Find out more at the school holiday program section of www.childrensprograms.ymca.org.au.

Agriculture planning feedback

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is seeking feedback on options to improve the planning system to better protect agriculture land and green wedges within 100 km of central Melbourne, which includes parts of our shire.
