Mount Alexander Shire Council is seeking a small and diverse group of community members interested in waste management in the shire to join a new Community Waste Reference Group (CWRG).

The CWRG will play an important role in providing input and advice on future plans to better manage waste and recycling in our shire.

“There’s a lot going on in the waste sector at the moment,” said Tanya Goddard, Executive Manager Infrastructure, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“There are new government policies in place with regards to how commingled recyclables, glass and Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) are collected and processed.

“There’s also increased community expectations that we will process waste responsibly.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us as a community to think about how we can reduce the waste that we currently send to landfill, and move towards a circular economy by keeping materials in use for as long as possible,” said Ms Goddard.

The CWRG will assist Council in facilitating meaningful conversations with the wider community around waste management, focusing on waste reduction and recycling opportunities, the separation of glass and FOGO, and also the development of a Resource Recovery Centre (RRC) at the Castlemaine Landfill Site.

“We are about to start planning for a new RRC at the Castlemaine Waste Facility,” said Ms Goddard.

“As part of that, we will be seeking community ideas on how to make the facility something that is useful, valuable and affordable for the shire.”

Members of the new CWRG is intended represent a broad cross-section of the community, with varying skills and backgrounds.
The group will comprise up to eight community members and at least one Councillor, in addition to Council officers.

“We’d love to hear from people who are passionate about waste management and the environment, and interested in playing a part in this exciting project,” said Ms Goddard.

Membership of the CWRG will be for at least one year with meetings held bi-monthly. Meetings will generally be conducted on Mondays from 5.00pm to 6.30pm.

Expressions of Interest are open until 5.00pm on Monday 26 April 2021.
