The Minister for Planning has approved Planning Scheme Amendment C73 to rezone the old gasworks site on the corner of Forest and Urquhart streets, Castlemaine to Commercial 1 Zone and has approved the accompanying planning permit application for the construction of a new supermarket on the land.

Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire Council Bronwen Machin said this is great news for the shire.

“We are delighted that the Minister has approved the amendment,” said Cr Machin.

“This is a large and important development for the area that will help people to shop locally and bring job and career opportunities for our community.

“It’s a great outcome for the town and the whole Mount Alexander Shire community,” she said.

The proponent, Lascorp Development Group, has not yet announced which brand of supermarket will occupy the building but have advised they are thrilled with the Minister’s decision.

“There is certainly a lot of talk within the community about what supermarket they’d like. We’ll just have to wait and see who Lascorp Development Group come to an arrangement with,” said Cr Machin.

Lascorp Development Group will need to submit plans to meet conditions of the planning permit and obtain a building permit prior to commencing construction.

“We’d love to see the supermarket built as soon as possible but the speed of development will depend on approvals and construction,” said Cr Machin.
