Do you find love is hard? Sydney-based artist Wendy Murray has just installed her latest public artwork Yes, Love is Hard Work in Castlemaine.

You can’t miss the bold print and pop of colour across from the library and Phee Broadway Theatre in Mechanics Lane.

According to artist Wendy Murray, the screen printed work acknowledges print and poster history and creates a new narrative for the laneway. The positive theme was inspired by the tone set by local artist Steve Parsons in Wings earlier this year.

While the poster series contains a positive message it is also a protest, inspired by multifaceted artist, activist and printmaker Corita Kent.

This year celebrates 100 years since the birth of Corita Kent (1918-1986), who was asked to design a US postal stamp.

After several years in limbo the final design was unveiled on the Love Boat. Corita refused to attend because it was not the kind of message about love that she meant.

Corita wanted the stamp to be unveiled at the United Nations, so she made Love is Hard Work, 1985 in response.

Wendy’s poster series Yes, Love is Hard Work is on exhibition until Sunday 17 June.

“Yes, Love is Hard Work is the latest in a series of paste-up works commissioned by Council to enrich our civic spaces,” said Vicki Anderson, Cultural and Development Officer, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“The program will also feature works by students at Castlemaine Secondary College, and local artists Elissa Sadgrove and Jessie Stanley later this year.

“Wendy’s work considers the metal surface of the laneway’s hording and the razor wire along the fence line. The bright colours are designed to fade to monochrome over time.

“Come and take a look, and let us know what you think,” said Vicki.
