Mount Alexander Shire residents are dog lovers according to the latest numbers of pet registrations in the shire.

There are 3,780 dogs registered in the shire and 1,342 cats – that equates to nearly three dogs registered for every cat.

“It’s great to see so many pet owners registered their pet by the 10 April deadline,” said Jeffry Amy, Coordinator Community Safety and Amenity, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

Mr Amy said the team looked at the data from registered pets and found the most popular dog breeds in the shire are kelpies, Labradors, Jack Russell and border collies.

“We found the most common dog name is Bella, followed by Molly, Charlie, Jack and Max,” said Mr Amy.

“The most unique dog names we came across were Mr Gizmo and Hiccup,” he said.

“We also had some great cat names like Omelette, Mr Cheese and my personal favourite – Chairman Meow!”

The most common cat names are Lucy, Smokey, Charlie, Tilly and Tiger. The most popular cats are domestic short hair and ragdoll and Burmese pure breeds.

“Thank you to everyone who registered their pet in time. If you haven’t yet registered we encourage you to do so as soon as possible to avoid a $317 infringement,” said Mr Amy.

If you need information on registering your pet please contact Council on 5471 1700 or visit www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/Dog_and_cat_registrations.
