People of all ages are encouraged to head along to the annual FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands and enjoy performances by local young musicians at this year’s Castlemaine heat.

Organised by Mount Alexander Shire Council’s youth FReeZA Committee, ‘Eight Metre Speaker’, the popular event provides young people with the chance to compete against their peers to win a $500 cash prize to go towards new instruments, equipment or rehearsal space. Winners also go on to play at the Regional Finals later in the year at Macedon Ranges.

“It's a great experience playing in front of a large enthusiastic crowd and a great way to receive feedback and encouragement on your skills as a musician and performer, not only from the judges, but the audience too,” said Maya Pearson, winner of the 2017 Battle of the Bands heat.

“I loved the hyped energy from the crowd. It made me perform even better and gave me a glimpse into the future playing in front many excited fans at my own shows,” said Ms Pearson.

Maya advises other young people thinking of entering this year’s Battle of the Bands “Believe in yourself, practise focusing on doing your best and have an engaging and professional stage presence”.

Battle of the Bands is an alcohol, drug and smoke free event, with no pass outs. The event is fully supervised and accessible.
