Council has awarded a three year pool management contract to Bendigo Regional YMCA Youth Services.

Wednesday 22 August 2018

Bendigo Regional YMCA Youth Services will manage outdoor pools in Castlemaine, Harcourt and Maldon for the next three years.

Mount Alexander Shire Council awarded the pool management contract last night at its Ordinary Meeting of Council.

Council’s Acting Director Sustainable Development Ben Grounds said the organisation had successfully managed the pools for the last ten years.

“Throughout summer, the pool is the place to be and we are confident that Bendigo Regional YMCA will continue to deliver a safe and popular pool season,” said Mr Grounds.

“They’ve already demonstrated their ability to work with the community and they’re running pools that people want to visit,” he said.

“We saw a 23 percent increase in attendance this last pool season, so even though the pools are only open for three months over summer they are certainly a popular place to cool off.

“We’re excited to continue the partnership with Bendigo Regional YMCA, which offers a great outcome for the community,” said Mr Grounds.

The contract includes a number of targeted programs to increase participation such as Girls Make Your Move, Grey Medallion, Aqua Yoga, family fun days and continuation of the VicSwim Summer learn to swim programs.

Bendigo Regional YMCA has also committed to training local lifeguards.

Community group Newstead and District Swimming Pool Incorporated did not submit a tender to manage the Newstead pool.

In order to support the continued involvement by the Newstead community in their pool, Council officers will soon hold discussions between the community and the preferred contractor regarding Newstead pool management.

Council will consider awarding a contract to manage the Newstead pool at its next ordinary meeting in September.

The contract to manage pools at Castlemaine, Maldon and Harcourt is $1,056,455 (excluding GST) over three years. Council is continuing to investigate options for an indoor aquatic centre for Castlemaine, which will be dependent on external funding.
