The historic Wheel & Loom building on Main St in Maldon is now available for lease.

Tarrengower Ward Councillor Stephen Gardner said it will be great to see the building back in action.

“Council has decided to lease out the building while we work on the Maldon Streetscape project, which is our number one priority project for Maldon," said Cr Gardner.

“Streetscape projects take time to consult, plan, tender and implement, so the last thing we wanted was the Wheel & Loom sitting empty during this process.

“And as a councillor and local, I don’t want to see any empty shops in Maldon, so getting someone into the Wheel & Loom is important.

“While the building does get some intermittent use now, having a tenant in there is a better option and also provides a return to Council,” he said.

Cr Gardner said Council has brought the building back to a safe standard with electrical and safety upgrades as well as much needed repairs to the floor.

“I look forward to seeing a great local business give the space a go, or maybe some creative people will get together and use it as a gallery or workshop space,” said Cr Gardner.

Michael Cantwell of Cantwell Property Castlemaine is managing the leasing and is expecting strong interest.

“The Wheel & Loom building is an iconic building, in a prime location and will suit a range of uses”, said Mr Cantwell.

Council purchased the Wheel & Loom in 2012 and planned to move the Visitor Information Centre to the site. This plan will be revisited once the streetscape project is completed.
