A free barbecue lunch, giveaways and activities are on offer at a community event to mark the new kerbside and recycling collection in Mount Alexander Shire by Veolia Environmental.

Everyone is invited to come along and have a free sausage sizzle lunch and find out some tips from the Hub Foundation on how to reduce waste.

There will be reusable coffee cups and drink bottle giveaways along with lots of fun activities for all the family, including free hessian bags of compost.

Head to the Market Building in Mostyn Street, Castlemaine from 11.00 to 12.30pm on Thursday 27 September for all the fun.

Council’s Acting Director Infrastructure and Development Ben Grounds said from 1 October Veolia will collect kerbside rubbish and recycling in the shire.

“We’re looking forward to a new era of kerbside collection with Veolia,” said Mr Grounds.

“Residents will see different trucks driving around the shire from October, and there will be two on display at Thursday’s event that kids can have a close look at,” he said.

Veolia operates a materials recovery facility at Echuca, which processes paper, cardboard, plastic, metals and glass.

“People can still continue to drop off waste and recyclable material at the Castlemaine Waste Facility in the same way they have always done,” he said.

Mr Grounds also encouraged residents to think twice before throwing items in the bin.

“Most of us can reduce the amount of waste we create, so let’s aim to reuse and recycle rather than simply throw things in the bin,” said Mr Grounds.

“And don’t forget to compost your kitchen scraps or set up a worm farm in your back yard!” he said.
