A barbecue lunch, giveaways and activities are on offer at a community event to mark the new kerbside and recycling collection by Veolia Environmental in the shire. Enjoy a free sausage sizzle lunch, collect a bag of compost and sit behind the wheel of a new rubbish truck at this fun family-friendly event. It will be held from 11.00 to 12.30pm on Thursday 27 September near the Market Building in Mostyn Street, Castlemaine.

Council is offering Youth Mental Health First Aid training in October and November for parents or carers of young people aged between 10 and 25 years. Over four evening sessions you will learn how to recognise possible emerging mental health concerns or a mental health crisis. We have received very positive feedback from this course and we invite you to register now. A registration fee of $50 will cover the cost of all course materials and catering. Council encourages local residents, businesses and organisations to become a Dementia Friend this month to help build a dementia-friendly community. September is Dementia Awareness Month so it’s a good time to pledge your support. To sign up and learn more about how you can be a dementia friend visit www.dementiafriendly.org.au.

Council is inviting the community to have a say on streetscape plans and design standards for Maldon to create a more attractive, safe and accessible town centre. The plans will provide the direction for streetscape improvements, and design options for things like paving, lighting and street furniture to guide conservation of the historic town centre.

Street tree pruning will start in October in Maldon and Castlemaine to protect public safety and improve the appearance of local streets. The pruning will remove dead wood from trees and maintain appropriate clearances from roads, footpaths, street lights and signs. Trees on private property will not be pruned. The works are in addition to the annual tree pruning program that maintains clearance from power lines.
