Free green waste disposal period

Shire residents can dispose of green waste for free at the Castlemaine and Maldon waste facilities from Saturday 20 October to Sunday 4 November. Green waste includes grass clippings, wood and tree branches less than 10cm in diameter. The waste must be free of rubbish and declared noxious weeds. Residents are encouraged to use this opportunity to prepare their property for the fire season.

Seniors Festival in October

Programs are now available for local events planned as part of this year’s Victorian Seniors Festival. Help launch the festival at 11.00am on Saturday 6 October at the Market Building on Mostyn Street, Castlemaine. Enjoy live performances including Bendigo Chinese Association Lions and Drums. There are many activities and events throughout October. Collect a Seniors Festival program from community hubs or online at www.cch.org.au.

Early years plan and forum

Council has developed a new plan to support the needs of local families and children aged 0-8 years and is looking for your feedback. The plan was developed with the community and provides a future vision and direction on early years services, programs and partnership activities. The draft plan will be presented at the third Mount Alexander Early Years Forum, which will be held from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday 10 October at the Civic Centre. Register your attendance by 5.00pm on Monday 8 October by searching ‘Mount Alexander’ on the Eventbrite website at www.eventbrite.com.au or call Council on 5471 1700. Read the draft plan at the Civic Centre, Castlemaine Library or online at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/HaveYourSay. Feedback will be accepted until 5.00pm on Sunday 21 October.

Youth Mental Health training

Council is offering Youth Mental Health First Aid training in October and November for parents or carers of young people aged between 10 and 25 years. Over four evening sessions you will learn how to recognise possible emerging mental health concerns or a mental health crisis. A registration fee of $50 will cover the cost of all course materials and catering. Find out more at the Training section of www.mountalexandershireyouth.com.au or contact Sharna Cropley, Coordinator Youth and Community Development, on 5471 1842.

Walk to school

Eleven local primary schools have signed up to participate in Walk to School Month in October. Council is again supporting this VicHealth initiative that aims to build healthy habits for life. We’d love to see families put their best foot forward and join thousands of other Victorian kids walk, ride or scoot to school. Part way is ok! If you can’t walk the whole way, why not try parking the car a few blocks from school and walk, ride or scoot the rest. Walk to School helps get kids active, and gives you a chance to talk and teach road safety skills while spending quality time together and getting active yourself.
