Council is inviting the community to have a final say on the streetscape plan and design standards for Maldon.

The plan provides a strategic, planned and consistent approach to tree selection, planting, street design, furniture, and other streetscape elements to enhance the character and function of central areas in the historic town.

“The plans were developed following extensive community consultation and focus on bringing out the appealing qualities that characterise Maldon as a picturesque 19th century town,” said Cr Stephen Gardner, Tarrengower Ward, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“We know that Maldon is loved far and wide for its charming store fronts with wide footpaths and sweeping verandahs, heritage features such as stone channels and beautiful views from Main Street to Anzac Hill.

“The streetscape plan focuses on enhancing these heritage features with practical short term recommendations that could be carried out straight away and larger long term projects that can be planned over a number of years,” he said.

High priority recommendations include improving pedestrian safety and access at key points, removing asphalt from the base of trees to improve tree health, replacing tired and outdated street furniture with signature town benches and new bins, installing more bike racks and restoring the historic kerbs and stone channels. The plan also recommends considering options for the ‘Old Bank’ corner and developing a way finding strategy.

Council has worked with a planning and design consultancy on the project which focuses on the central segments of Main Street and High Street in Maldon. The project was shaped by four guiding principles and extensive community engagement via a survey, a public forum, feedback at a listening post and input from the Maldon Streetscape Steering Committee.

“We are confident that the streetscape plan and design guidelines address the community feedback we received, and respects key design references such as the Maldon Conservation Study,” said Cr Gardner.

“The management of Maldon’s notable streetscapes will bring benefits to residents, business and visitors. We want to make sure we’ve got it right so please let us know your feedback.”

The plans and designs can be viewed on Council’s website, the Civic Centre in Castlemaine or at the Visitor Information Centre in Maldon. Send your feedback titled Maldon Streetscape Plans to info@mountalexander.vic.gov.au or post to Mount Alexander Shire Council, PO Box 185, Castlemaine VIC 3450 by Sunday 21 October 2018.

Council is working with a local steering committee including community and state government representatives on a broader streetscape rejuvenation project focusing on the undergrounding of power, shopfront restorations and other improvements to public spaces.
