Come to a free information session and learn about cyber safety and how young people are using technology.

Friday 2 November 2018

Parents and carers in Mount Alexander Shire are invited to join a free event at Castlemaine Secondary College to learn how to support online safety for children and teens.

The event will include an exhibition of digital messages developed by students to promote the safe use of online technology to peers, followed by a community e-safety presentation delivered by experts from the Office of eSafety Commission.

“There is a lot to understand when it comes to cyber safety,” said Ms Sharna Cropley, Coordinator Youth and Community Development, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“This event provides an excellent overview of the importance of internet safety issues around social networking, cyberbullying and online stranger contact.”

“The e-safety presentation will explain how young people are using technology, social media and the risks they may be exposed to,” she said.

Participants will receive practical information to support conversations with their children and targeted safety advice to support a safe and enjoyable online experience.

They will also hear how students are supported through the health and wellbeing curriculum at Castlemaine Secondary College.

The event will start with a showcase of digital messages created by Year 9 students at Castlemaine Secondary College.

Students worked with digital media specialists from local creative agency Storyland to explore and develop positive messages to share with their peers.

“This is a great example of how students are learning and talking about online safety in schools each day,” said Sharna.

The event is delivered by the Mount Alexander Youth Wellbeing Group, a partnership between Mount Alexander Shire Council, the Central Victorian Primary Care Partnership and Castlemaine Secondary College. Finger food and light refreshments will be provided.
