Farmers who undertake approved environmental activities can apply for a 20 percent discount off the general property rate through the Mount Alexander Shire Land Management Rate.

The Land Management Rate (LMR) is available to properties rated as a farm in the 2018/2019 financial year and are more than 20 hectares (49 acres) in size, or operate a farming business.

Mount Alexander Council has a three year rate rebate program. As we are one full year into the three year cycle, eligible landholders can apply for the rebate for the next two years on a single application form.

“With two years to complete projects, landholders can tackle larger projects,” said Ben Grounds, Manager of Community Places and Spaces.

Successful applicants must show they are planning to undertake environmental protection works on their property over the next two years.

“A lot of farmers are doing great work and this is a way to reward responsible land management,” said Mr Grounds.

To be eligible for the LMR, landholders must undertake one additional activity over and above those required under state legislation.

Through the LMR Council is encouraging farmers to carry out activities such as fencing off waterways, establishing perennial pastures, protecting remnant vegetation, preventing and controlling erosion and salinity or revegetating with local native plant species.

“If you are thinking about making improvements to your property that qualify, then we urge you to apply for the discounted Land Management Rate,” said Mr Grounds.

Learn more about the LMR or apply online at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/lmr or phone Council on 5471 1700.

Applications close on Friday 1 March.
