Have your say on plans to turn the former Castlemaine Secondary College into a training, education and community hub.

Mount Alexander Shire Council is calling for feedback on a proposal to see part of the former Castlemaine Secondary College campus on Etty Street to become a new training, education and business incubator hub.

Council endorsed plans in late 2018 to lease the space from the Minister for Education under a peppercorn arrangement for 15 years. It would then sublease the space to Workspace Australia and Castlemaine Hot Rod Centre Ltd.

“We believe a partnership with Workspace Australia and our hot rod community has the potential to turn the vacant former college into a thriving community hub,” said Darren Fuzzard, Chief Executive Officer, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“The agreement is for a training and education centre for the local hot rod industry and office space for Workspace and associated small businesses and community groups,” he said.

Some of the campus will continue to be used by students and teachers at the secondary college and floor space will be set aside for community use.

“We can see the benefits of this partnership and now we’re seeking to hear from the community about whether they agree with the proposal,” said Mr Fuzzard.

Workspace Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that provides support to local job-seekers and 60 small businesses in Castlemaine and Maldon. The organisation currently leases the old hospital site on Halford Street in Castlemaine.

Castlemaine Hot Rod Centre Ltd and its partners plan to establish a life-long community education and industry innovation campus based around the local automotive culture. Occupation of the Castlemaine Secondary College campus will allow Castlemaine Hot Rod Centre Ltd to continue and expand collaborative projects.

The arrangement does not include use of the former college oval.

Details on the sublease can be found on Council’s website at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/HaveYourSay.

Written submissions to the proposal will be accepted until 5.00pm on Wednesday 31 July.

Submissions should be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Mount Alexander Shire Council, PO Box 185, Castlemaine VIC 3450, or emailed to info@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.

Submissions will be considered in accordance with Section 223 of the Local Government Act 1989. Submitters need to indicate whether they wish to be heard before Council at an Ordinary Meeting of Council on Tuesday 20 August.

To discuss the proposed lease contact Lynne Williamson, Property Portfolio Coordinator, on 5471 1700.
