Free green waste disposal

Local residents and ratepayers can dispose of green waste for free at Castlemaine and Maldon waste facilities from Saturday 26 October to Sunday 10 November. Residents are encouraged to use the opportunity to prepare their homes and properties for the Fire Danger Period. Acceptable items include garden waste, grass clippings, natural wood and tree branches (diameter less than 10cm). Waste must be emptied from plastic bags and not contain rubbish or declared noxious weeds. Conditions apply.

Celebrate Seniors Festival

There are many events and activities planned throughout October as part of the Victorian Seniors Festival. Activities include a dance, morning tea, free community lunch, movie day and choir, craft and word game sessions. Highlights include:

Festival launch – 10.30am on Saturday 5 October on the steps of the Market Building on Mostyn Street, Castlemaine.

Seniors Expo – Friday 4 to Sunday 6 October at the Market Building.

James Blundell concert – 2.00pm on Friday October 11 at Castlemaine Town Hall. Entry by gold coin donation to SES.

Brochures will be available from key community hubs.

Road closure in Saint Street

Saint Street in Castlemaine is closed to traffic between Barker and Wheeler streets while stage 2 works are underway to improve drainage in the area. Residents can still access their property. The detour is via Forest Street. Works are expected to be completed by mid-October. For more information contact the Infrastructure Team on 5471 1700.

After hours customer service

The customer service counter at the Civic Centre will stay open until 6.30pm on Tuesday 17 September. The trial will help gauge demand for face-to-face customer services outside business hours.

Big Battle of the Bands

Congratulations to EMF, winner of the Mount Alexander Battle of the Bands. The band won a $500 prize to be used towards new instruments, equipment or rehearsal space. Runners up were Monkey Hands and Stonks.

Event organisers Eight Metre Speaker thank event sponsors Theatre Royal along with FReeZA, Council’s Youth Development Team, Mark Woods, Mickey Levis and judges Alex Bennitt, Zeb Olsen and Benz. FReeZA is a Victorian Government funded program that supports events for young people.

Apply for leadership program

LEAD Loddon Murray is calling on emerging community leaders to apply for the Loddon Murray Community Leadership Program. The program offers leadership, personal and professional development. Update on Victory Park

Works on the new play space at Victory Park are progressing well and are on track for completion in October. The space will feature an accessible carousel, musical element, flying fox, a ping pong table and more. Council advises the existing Victory Park playground will be removed this week to maintain the schedule of works. We apologise for the inconvenience. The new play space will be officially opened on Thursday 24 October during Children’s Week.
