Bridge closure on Gaulton Street

Works to repair railings on Sherriff’s Bridge on Gaulton Street, Castlemaine (near the Midland Highway) will soon begin. The bridge will be temporarily closed to all traffic from 7.30am on Tuesday 22 October until 4.00pm on Friday 25 October. Detours are via Elizabeth or Forest streets. Local residents have been informed. Parking to the rear of businesses on Johnstone Street will be maintained. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Ride to work day

Hop on your bike on Wednesday 16 October and take part in National Ride2Work Day. The day celebrates the benefits of riding to work and brings together the communities that support it. Go into the draw to win a $1,000 travel voucher by registering before the day at the rides and events page of www.bicyclenetwork.com.au.

Volunteer networking event

Volunteer Central Vic and Council invite community groups, volunteers, committees and board members to the Spring into Volunteering networking event. The free event will be held from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Thursday 31 October. Come along and have conversations, share resources and participate in the development of a new volunteer training program. Bookings are essential and can be made via www.eventbrite.com or phone 5421 1619. Light supper provided.

Healthy Heart winners

Congratulations to John Ravell and Kuniko Manil who won prizes during the Mount Alexander Seniors Festival. John won a market shopping trolley and a $50 Castlemaine Fresh gift voucher, and Kuniko won a $50 Castlemaine Fresh gift voucher. The competition was open to everyone who walked or rode to the James Blundell concert, festival expo or launch. The prizes were courtesy of Healthy Heart of Victoria. Thank you to all who entered and got active along the way. Well done to the Seniors Festival Committee for another successful year.

October is Walk to School Month

Don't forget to encourage children to walk, ride or scoot to school during Walk to School Month. Get active on the way to and from school. Part way is ok! If you can’t walk the whole way try parking a few blocks away. Look out for more information at your school or visit www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au.

Children’s Week celebrations

Join us for a special Children’s Week celebration to mark the opening of the new play space at Victory Park in Castlemaine. The play space will provide hours of fun for all ages and abilities. Explore the cubby, climb the boulders, fly the zip line, play ping pong or whirl on the carousel. Council has joined up with the Seniors Festival and Mount Alexander Early Years Forum for this free, all ages event. There’ll be Indigenous story-telling, face painting, badge making, an early years display and more. Enjoy free ice-cream and fruit or buy a hot dog. The opening will start at 4.00pm, and activities will run to 7.00pm on Thursday 24 October. For more information contact Council or visit our website.

Free green waste disposal

Local residents and ratepayers can dispose of green waste for free at Castlemaine and Maldon waste facilities from Saturday 26 October to Sunday 10 November. Residents are encouraged to use the opportunity to prepare their homes and properties for the Fire Danger Period. Acceptable items include garden waste, grass clippings, natural wood and tree branches (diameter less than 10cm). Waste must be emptied from plastic bags and not contain contaminants such as rubbish or declared noxious weeds. Conditions apply.
