Slashing program underway

Council's roadside slashing program is now underway with our Works Unit cutting grass along the sides of sealed rural roads. The program helps to prepare the shire for the fire danger period and increase visibility for motorists. Find an on online map of roadsides to be slashed at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/FirePrevention. Works will be finished by mid-December.

Children’s Week celebrations

Join us for a special Children’s Week celebration to mark the opening of the new play space at Victory Park in Castlemaine. The play space will provide hours of fun for all ages and abilities. Explore the cubby, climb the boulders, fly the zip line, play ping pong or whirl on the carousel. Council has joined up with the Seniors Festival and Mount Alexander Early Years Forum for this free, all ages event. There’ll be Indigenous story-telling, face painting, badge making, an early years display and more. Enjoy free ice-cream and fruit or buy a hot dog. The opening will start at 4.00pm, and activities will run to 7.00pm on Thursday 24 October. For more information contact Council or visit our website.

Free green waste disposal

Local residents and ratepayers can dispose of green waste for free at Castlemaine and Maldon waste facilities from Saturday 26 October to Sunday 10 November. We encourage you to use this opportunity to prepare your home and property for the Fire Danger Period. Acceptable items include garden waste, grass clippings, natural wood and tree branches (diameter less than 10cm). Waste must be emptied from plastic bags and not contain contaminants such as rubbish or declared noxious weeds. Conditions apply.

Walking group volunteer

CHIRP Community Health and Healthy Heart of Victoria (HHV) are calling for Expressions of Interest for volunteers to support the Castlemaine walking group. The ideal candidate will be friendly, respectful and reliable. First Aid and CPR training will be provided. Council is introducing a free supported playgroup program to provide parents and carers the chance to get together and play with their children in a welcoming and supported environment. To find out whether this confidence boosting program is right for you or someone you know call or text Libby Page, Supported Playgroup Facilitator, on 0436 804 583. One-on-one visits are also available.

Bridge closure on Gaulton Street

Works are underway this week to repair railings on Sherriff’s Bridge on Gaulton Street, Castlemaine (near the Midland Highway). The bridge will be closed to all traffic from 7.30am on Tuesday 22 October until 4.00pm on Friday 25 October. Detours are via Elizabeth or Forest streets. Vehicles will still be able to park at the rear of businesses on Johnstone Street. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Read annual highlights

Council has considered its annual report outlining the organisation’s performance for the 2018/2019 financial year. The report provides a summary of highlights, progress against objectives in the Council Plan, a performance statement and financial report. It was delivered to the Minister for Local Government by 30 September 2019, in accordance with the Local Government Act 1989. A copy of the report and summary are available on Council’s website and at the Civic Centre.

Sutton Grange AGM

The Sutton Grange Hall Special Committee of Council will hold their AGM at 7.30pm on Thursday 14 November at the Sutton Grange Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend.
