Refurbished library to open soon

The Castlemaine Library upgrade is almost complete. Library services will be unavailable for one week while the team transitions from the pop-up library in the Market Building to the refurbished library on Mechanics Lane. The pop-up library will be closed from 5.00pm on Tuesday 12 November. The refurbished library will reopen at 10.00am on Wednesday 20 November. During the closure you can drop off borrowed books through the library returns chute on Barker Street.

Property inspections underway

In partnership with the CFA, Council is carrying out property inspections to assess for fire hazards in the lead up to the Fire Danger Period. The inspections determine whether property owners need to reduce fuel loads to decrease the risk of fire. Hazards are assessed against CFA guidelines. Farms and rural properties near townships are prioritised to reduce the risk of fire spreading to populated areas. Prevention notices, which outline any required works, will be sent this month.

Tree pruning to start soon

Council will soon begin the tree pruning program to provide clearance around powerlines in Castlemaine. Arborists will aim to maintain the shape and character of the trees as much as possible. Trees on private property will not be pruned. Powercor maintains trees on road reserves outside the Declared Areas of Castlemaine, including McKenzies Hill. It has the authority to prune trees on private property in order to maintain clearance.

Drainage works at Elphinstone

Council will soon begin works to improve drainage near the railway lines at Wright Street, Elphinstone. The project includes connecting drains, installing drainage pipes and pits. The area will be landscaped with topsoil and mulch with tree planting to occur later in autumn. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project. It will take around three weeks to complete, weather permitting. This is a joint project between Council, V/Line and VicTrack.

New footpath on William Street

Council will install a concrete footpath along the southern side of William Street in Castlemaine. The 300 metre section of footpath will link existing footpaths from Wheeler Street to the bus stop outside the Leisterville Community Centre. The works will start next week and be completed by Christmas, weather permitting.

Free green waste disposal

Don't forget that local residents and ratepayers can dispose of green waste for free at Castlemaine and Maldon waste facilities from Saturday 26 October to Sunday 10 November. You can take garden waste, grass clippings, natural wood and tree branches (diameter less than 10cm). No plastic bags, rubbish or declared noxious weeds. Take proof of residency. Conditions apply.

New crossing at Camp Reserve

Works will begin next week to install a pedestrian crossing on Forest Street near the main entrance to Camp Reserve on Forest Street, Castlemaine. The crossing will link key walking and cycling paths and provide safer access for cyclists and pedestrians. It is expected to be completed by Christmas. Please take care when travelling in the area and follow signs. Apologies for any inconvenience. The project is funded by Healthy Heart of Victoria.
