A new play space at Stanley Park North is on track for construction next year, with a master plan for the site adopted by Mount Alexander Shire Council.

The master plan was prepared to make sure the new play space will be well integrated with the rest of the park and town through paths to car parking, nearby businesses, the swimming pool and BMX track.

“The master plan shows the location of the play space, pathways, parking and additional tree planting and other elements that will help us to make best use of the 8,000m² area,” said Cath Olive, Manager Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“It also identifies opportunities to include the region’s history and indigenous culture in the park through plantings and public art,” said Ms Olive.

Council has finalised the concept plan for the play space, which was developed with members of the community and students at Harcourt Valley Primary School.

“We really appreciate the contribution of the Harcourt community to make the most of this central community space,” said Ms Olive.

“Their input is going to help create a wonderful space for generations to enjoy,” she said.

Ms Olive said work still needs to be done before construction of the play space begins.

“The next step is to prepare the technical drawings which map out construction details for each element of the play space,” she said.

“Once that’s completed we’ll be able to put the plans out for tender, with a view to starting construction once a contractor has been selected. We will be constructing the play space in 2020.”

The play space will be funded by Council and the Victorian Government’s Community Sports and Infrastructure Fund. Harcourt Progress Association will fund a community barbecue at the park.

“Some elements in the master plan are as yet to be funded such as the formalising the car parking areas off High Street and landscape works that are outside of the play space area. We’ll work towards securing funding for these in the years to come,” said Ms Olive.

The play space concept plan and the Stanley Park North master plan are available on the Major Projects section of Council’s website at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/MajorProjects.
