Mayor Henderson elected

Congratulations to Cr Christine Henderson and Cr Max Lesser who were elected by Councillors as Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire at a council meeting in November. Thank you to Cr Bronwen Machin for her valuable contribution in the role of Mayor for more than two years.

Bushfire preparedness event

Learn how to prepare yourself, your pets and property for bushfires at a family-friendly information session
at Castlemaine. Speak with fire and emergency experts and hear presentations from bushfire survivors and representatives from the CFA, Agriculture Victoria and local animal welfare organisations. The free event will be held from 11.00am to 1.00pm on Saturday 15 December at the grassed area on Mostyn Street between the Market Building and supermarket near Victory Park. Presentations start at 11.30am at the Ray Bradfield Room.

Free green waste disposal

To help with the clean up following recent storms, residents and rate payers can dispose of green waste for free at Castlemaine and Maldon waste facilities until Sunday 1 December. Conditions apply. Acceptable items include garden waste, grass clippings, natural wood and tree branches (diameter less than 10cm). No plastic bags or noxious weeds. Proof of residence will be required.

Join our climate change forum

Council will hold a Climate Change Forum on Monday 9 December to inform its future action on climate change. The forum will take place over a series of sessions held between 9.00am and 8.00pm on Monday 9 December in the Council Chambers at the Civic Centre. Interested speakers must return the registration form by Monday 2 December. Find the form at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/HaveYourSay and the Civic Centre. Written submissions are due by Thursday 5 December.

Nominate for Australia Day Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2020 Mount Alexander Shire Australia Day Awards. Categories are Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year and Event of the Year. Find the nomination form at www. mountalexander.vic.gov.au/AustraliaDay, the Civic Centre or Visitor Information Centres at Castlemaine or Maldon. Nominations close at 5.00pm on Friday 6 November.

Have your say on streetscape plan

We are seeking community feedback on the revised streetscape plan and design standards for Castlemaine. Find the plans at the historic Market Building on Mostyn Street in Castlemaine and at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/HaveYourSay. Submit your feedback form to Council by 5.00pm on Sunday 8 December.

Go orange to end violence

Thank you to the local businesses who have decorated their shopfront in orange to show support for gender equality. The 16-day campaign, coordinated by Mount Alexander Family Violence Prevention Network, runs until 10 December. Businesses can register with Council for the chance to win prizes.

Fruit fly workshops

If you grow fruit or vegetables, attend a free workshop to learn what you can do to help prevent an outbreak of Queensland fruit fly. Fruit fly attacks many different types of fruits and vegetables, and if left uncontrolled, can lead to total crop losses.

Newstead – 1.00pm to 3.00pm on Thursday 28 November at Newstead Community Centre.
Maldon – 6.00pm to 8.00pm on Thursday 28 November at Maldon Community Centre.
Castlemaine – 10.00am to 12.00noon on Friday 29 November at Town Hall, Lyttleton Street.
