Time is running out to register for Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Climate Change Forum coming up in Castlemaine on Monday 9 December.

Council is encouraging members of the community to come along and speak or make a submission to help inform its future action on climate change.

“The forum will help Councillors better understand how we can work with the community to best react and adapt to the impacts of climate change,” said Cr Christine Henderson, Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire.

“Anyone can register to speak or make a submission. We want to hear a range of views from a broad cross section of the community.

“The information we hear will help us decide if we declare a climate change emergency and help shape Council’s future actions and resources in this area,” she said.

“At the same time the organisation is looking at what other changes it can make as part of its day-to-day operations and in partnership with the community to build on the work we are already doing,” she said.

The forum follows the presentation of a petition from Mount Alexander Climate Change Emergency Team (MACET) at the Ordinary Council Meeting in October.

In response, Council resolved to invite all interested individuals, businesses or group representatives to present to Councillors to inform a whole of community response to changing climate conditions that affect the community.

The public forum will take place over three sessions held between 9am and 8pm on Monday 9 December in the Council Chambers at the Civic Centre. Speakers will get five minutes to present to Councillors. Five minutes will also be allocated for questions from Councillors.

“Our aim is to provide an environment where community members feel comfortable to share a diverse range of views,” said Mayor Henderson.

Interested speakers must register by Monday 2 December 2019, by completing the registration form at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/HaveYourSay.

Written submissions will be accepted until Thursday 5 December. Email your submission titled to info@mountalexander.vic.gov.au or post to PO Box 185 Castlemaine VIC 3450.

If you would like join the forum as an observer email council with your name, email and the session you would like to attend.
More information and a summary of actions undertaken by Council are available online or at the Civic Centre.
