Pile of newspapers wrapped in string.

Mount Alexander Shire Council has awarded a contract to reconstruct 2.85 kilometres of road across three sections of the Bendigo – Sutton Grange Road.

The works will begin in mid-January and are expected to be completed by April, weather permitting.

The sections of road to be upgraded are:
• Grays Road to the Council boundary (0.65km)
• Ontario Lodge Lane to Faraday-Sutton Grange Road (1km)
• Jennings Hill Road south (1.2km).

“This project will markedly improve road safety and make a big difference for road users,” said Phil Josipovic, Director Infrastructure and Development, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“We’ll be removing and reconstructing the existing surface and road layers, widening and sealing road shoulders and upgrading the drainage to improve water run-off,” said Mr Josipovic.

“With such a big project there will be inevitably traffic delays. The road will be reduced to one lane in parts. If possible, we encourage motorists to take alternative routes during the upgrade.”

“We know this is a busy road and an important link to the Calder Freeway and our communities. We apologise for the temporary inconvenience and are confident this project will make a significant improvement in the road for years to come.”

Access to properties will be maintained at all times. Nearby residents will be informed of the works via mail.

Following a competitive tender process the contract was awarded to Bitu-Mill Civil Pty Ltd, who also upgraded other sections of the road in 2016.

The project is jointly funded through Regional Roads Victoria’s Fixing Country Roads Program and the Federal Roads to Recovery Program.
