It’s been one year on since Mount Alexander Shire Council adopted a streetscape plan and design standards for Maldon, and the project has moved to the civic design stage.

According to Council’s Manager Economy and Culture David Leathem, surveyors have been out and about to progress the schematic designs over the past few weeks.

“Works have been underway to survey parts of the town centre and complete geotechnical testing in order to develop more detailed designs based on the concepts adopted in the plan last year,” said Mr Leathem.

“The Maldon Streetscape Plan aims to improve character and function of the town centre to celebrate the town’s significant heritage values, service the needs of local residents and businesses, and boost tourism in the region.”

“The plan focuses on the business precinct in Main and High streets, and the designs will help inform our business case to seek funding to bring the plans to fruition,” he said.

The streetscape plan is part of the Maldon Town Centre Restoration Project, a partnership between the State Government, Council and the Maldon community.

Project priorities also include the provision of underground power and the restoration of shopfronts in the main business and retail area.

The project will bring benefits to the town including better facilities and pedestrian access to local businesses and parking, improved amenity and visual appearance to attract new businesses, residents and visitors, an increase in the capital value of buildings through greater preservation and restoration and improved power supply and safety.

Council has worked with Urban Initiatives to talk to property owners in the town centre regarding plans for a shop improvement project and discussions are ongoing. At the same time, Powercor is undertaking detailed design related to the undergrounding of power.

“It’s great to see these works progressing with continued input along the way from the Maldon Streetscape Steering Committee,” said Mr Leathem.

“We are also grateful to the Victorian Government for the funding to develop the comprehensive business case to show the economic benefit of investment in Maldon.”
