Everyone is invited to come together with the community on Australia Day at Victory Park in Castlemaine.

“We’d love to see a big crowd to welcome our new citizens and congratulate winners of the Mount Alexander Shire Australia Day Awards,” said Christine Henderson, Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“This year we have a record 16 new citizens pledging allegiance to our country. This is such a special time and we’re pleased to welcome them as citizens on our national day,” said Cr Henderson.

“We will also hear from humanitarian and refugee advocate Matthew Albert, as guest speaker and Australia Day Ambassador,” she said.

Matthew won the 2005 Victorian Young Australian of the Year Award. He started his career with the United Nations in Kenya and has since founded the Sudanese Australian Integrated Learning Program, the largest support organisation of its type in Australia.

The Australia Day community event will feature entertainment from the Corker Orchestra and free ice cream. The Rotary Club of Castlemaine will be raising money for the bushfire relief fund through food sales.

“Don’t forget that entry to our four outdoor pools is free on Australia Day, so head along, cool off and make the most of these wonderful community assets,” said Cr Henderson.
