Mount Alexander Shire Council is urging community members to follow health advice and continue to support each other in the fight to contain the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Mount Alexander Shire Mayor Christine Henderson said everyone has an important role to play in helping stop community transmission.

“The advice from health authorities on what we can do to reduce the spread and prevent COVID-19 infection is clear,” said Mayor Henderson.

“It is up to us to each and every one of us to make these measures part of our daily habits. Maintain good hygiene, use the cough etiquette and follow the social distancing rules.

“We are at the point now where we need to stay at home, unless you have to go out for essential things like food, work or health reasons.”

“This is not just about doing the right thing. This is about taking action now that will save lives and reduce the pressure on our health system,” she said.

Mayor Henderson said it’s encouraging to see how our community has responded to the crisis.

“We’ve already seen many people reach out to their neighbours, join online community groups and use phone trees to connect, check in and support each other.

“This will become even more important as we move to tighter restrictions over the next few months,” said Mayor Henderson.

“Businesses have also responded in a positive way by adapting with new ways to do business, from preparing take-ways meals, offering home delivery and moving services over the phone or online.

“At the same time, we know the restrictions due to COVID-19 are significantly effecting local business and some have already been forced to close.

“One of the best things that we can do right now is buy or shop local to keep every dollar here and every job we can in Mount Alexander Shire.

“The state and federal governments have announced some initial relief packages and we are expecting to find out more details on support packages and possible rent relief soon.

“At the local government level we have established a COVID-19 response team which meets daily to consider our actions to keep essential services running.

“We are also working with other health, government and emergency services to respond to this pandemic and coordinate support for our community.

“Councillors and staff are also looking at what we can do to help reduce financial pressures in the short, medium and long-term for residents, ratepayers and local businesses.

“This is complicated and will take a bit of time as we work through options and discussions with other levels of government.

“The situation is evolving rapidly and we’ll keep the community informed as plans progress,” said Cr Henderson.
