Update on former Chewton Community Centre

Pile of newspapers wrapped in string.

Council is encouraging community members to have a say on the former Chewton Community Centre.

Wednesday 1 April 2020

Community members are urged to make a submission on the former Chewton Community Centre before the public feedback period closes on Thursday 9 April.

“We will reopen submissions later in the year, but for those who have their submissions ready we’d love to hear your ideas,” said Cath Olive, Manager Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“The current restrictions on social distancing and cancellation of non-essential events means we can’t open the building to the community,” said Ms Olive.

“However, you can still have a virtual tour of the former Wesleyan church by taking a look at photos and video on our website,” said Ms Olive.

The virtual tour will help community members to make an informed submission on how they would like Council to proceed in respect to the building.

Council will place the process to dispose of the building on-hold once the public feedback period has closed.

“We’ll keep the community informed about the next steps and will reopen the submission process in coming months. In the meantime we encourage people to make a submission before the April deadline,” said Ms Olive.

Council cancelled an open day for the former community centre in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The building, located at 205 Main Road in Chewton, is in a poor state of repair with rising damp and termite damage. It has been closed to the public since 2010 due to safety risks.

Council resolved to sell the building in 2017 and subdivide the land from the Senior Citizens building to enable the sale.

Due to the passage of time Council invited the community to make a submission on its intention to sell the building. The current round of community feedback is due to Council by 5.00pm on Thursday 9 April.
