Complete our survey to help shape pandemic recovery

Local business operators and creative people are urged to complete a survey on the impact of COVID-19.

Mount Alexander Shire Council is urging local businesses and creatives to complete a survey on the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the shire to help create a support plan.

“We know COVID-19 has brought hardship to many businesses and creatives in our shire and would like to better understand the impacts on individual businesses and livelihoods," said David Leathem, Manager Economy and Culture, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“We understand this is a difficult time for many but ask that you take some time to share your story with us by completing the survey on the Have your Say page of our website so we can better understand the economic impacts of the pandemic," said Mr Leathem.

“This information will allow us to uncover the main challenges and identify the priority areas for support in our community to shape our recovery plan for the shire, and will also be used to advocate to government and other agencies for support initiatives.”

Council is also working with several working groups to assess the economic and social impacts in the shire, as part of its response to the pandemic.

It has set up a local working group with representatives from community and health organisations, businesses networks and emergency services, and now has a local business sub-group to focus on ways to support local businesses and industry, including tourism and the arts which met for the first time this week.

Contacts from a across a range of industry sectors are providing intelligence and feedback to both groups to ensure decision making is informed and in line with local business needs.

The business sub group includes representatives from George Weston Foods, Workspace Australia, Maldon Inc., The Mill Castlemaine and Maxi IGA, as well as representatives from retail, trade, agriculture, business support and creative industries.

Council announced some initial relief measures in March, and staff continue to provide support to help local businesses adapt to COVID-19 and meet sanitation, social distancing and licensing requirements.

Staff have been checking in with business operators and creatives to understand their situation, provide support and identify opportunities, while encouraging residents to buy local. There’s also a new initiative to support our arts, culture and creative industries in the pipeline.
