Message from the Mayor for Volunteer Week

Mayor Christine Henderson

It's National Volunteer Week and Mayor Christine Henderson warmly thanks all the many volunteers for their generous contribution to our community.

Monday 18 May 2020

This week is National Volunteer Week, a special time to celebrate and acknowledge our volunteers and their incredible, selfless work.

We know that at Council we could never achieve all that we do without the help of volunteers, who dedicate their time to assist with so many activities and programs.

Our knowledgeable volunteers warmly welcome tourists and guests to our towns at the Castlemaine and Maldon Visitor Information Centres. They help to deliver our social support programs that bring fun and joy to some of our most vulnerable community members. Our passionate committee members help to guide Council decisions and manage many of our well-loved community, sports and recreation facilities.

We have volunteers who help to shape Council programs and activities for young people and are so lucky to have volunteers who work tirelessly to protect and improve our natural environment for the benefit of generations to come.

Our community is so fortunate to have many groups and organisations that provide volunteer-led projects and initiatives. They bring colour and richness to our community and we are so very grateful for their contribution.

The theme of Volunteer Week this year is ‘Changing Communities, Changing Lives’. We have never seen such a collective change to our lives and community as we have over the last few months. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has certainly shown the importance of community and the vital role of volunteers.

From community-led initiatives such as the Mount Alexander Community Pantry, to people helping and supporting each other, running errands, checking in on neighbours and developing new resources and places to connect online. Even by simply staying at home you have made a massive contribution to reducing the spread and infection of COVID-19. We thank each and every one of you.

We know the pandemic has changed how people volunteer and that many are missing the opportunity to connect with others. We look forward to the time when we can welcome back our volunteers and community groups can once again reunite.

Our community is so fortunate to have such passionate volunteers, many of whom have dedicated years and decades to others. They have jobs, families, and many other commitments and yet, there is always room in their schedule and heart for their community.

Thank you to all the volunteers who give their time so generously to help our community.
