Mount Alexander Shire Council is pleased to continue its support of the community-managed Chewton Swimming Pool, contributing $42,800 to assist in the facility’s operational costs for the 2020/2021 pool season.

Council resolved to continue to provide annual financial support to the pool at its July meeting, recognising the importance of the community-managed facility to residents.

“Chewton Swimming Pool is a much-loved and important asset in the community for a range of reasons,” said Mount Alexander Shire Mayor, Christine Henderson.

“In summer, the pool is a well-used community hub – offering residents not just a place to cool off, but also employment, volunteering opportunities and a variety of swim safety programs for all ages.

“Council is pleased to be able to continue to assist the community in running the pool for the 2020/2021 season,” said Cr Henderson.

The Chewton Swimming Pool is one of five outdoor swimming pools in the shire.

The Chewton Swimming Pool is a public facility managed by a community-based committee, Chewton Pool Incorporated (CPI). This committee reports directly to the landowner and land manager, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

Frog Peck, Chewton Pool Incorporated Acting President, said the grant will ensure the pool continues to be a safe and welcoming community hub, providing a place for health, recreation and aquatic education for all throughout the warmer months.

“This grant will assist us in managing the costs that come with operating a pool, such as the provision of staff and qualified lifeguards,” said Mr Peck.

“This summer will be our tenth season running the facility as Chewton Pool Incorporated, and we are looking forward to seeing a mix of familiar faces, young and old, and hopefully lots of new visitors to the pool as well!”, said Mr Peck.
