Mount Alexander Shire Council is currently undertaking conservation works for the
heritage-listed Market Building in Castlemaine.

Council developed a Conservation Management Plan for the building in 2013, outlining its heritage values and significance, and providing guidance on required works to conserve and protect this important community asset.

Council has undertaken a range of conservation works on the building in recent years in line with the Conservation Management Plan, with current works expected to be completed in December.

Planned works on the Castlemaine Market Building over the coming months will include:

  • Investigative works on the perimeter sandstone plinth to plan for future conservation
  • Repairs to doorways and exterior brickwork
  • Extraction of salt and moisture from the northern, tuck-pointed facade
  • Cleaning to remove surface build up from the rendered facade
  • Flag pole repair and repaint.

The works will be carried out under a permit exemption issued by Heritage Victoria.

The historic Market Building at 44 Mostyn Street in Castlemaine is one of the shire’s most significant buildings, recognised as being of broad architectural, social and cultural importance.

Listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and the National Estate Register, the Market Building was completed in 1862. It was originally one of three markets, with the two buildings on either side removed around 1920.

The current building fell into disrepair last century but through the efforts of the local community and the National Trust, the building was saved, fully restored and reopened in 1974. It was converted to the Castlemaine Visitor Information Centre and exhibition space in 2000.

The Visitor Information Centre at the Market Building is temporarily closed to visitors for at least six weeks, due to the return of Stage 3 ‘Stay at Home’ restrictions in regional Victoria.

Local business support and visitor servicing is still being offered by the team by phone on 1800 171 888 and visitors@mountalexander.vic.gov.au
