Coronavirus (COVID-19) update

A State of Disaster has been declared in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, with new restrictions in place across the state until Sunday 13 September. This will give Victoria Police additional powers to make sure people comply with public health directions. Regional Victoria has moved to Stage 3 'Stay at Home' restrictions.

Under these restrictions there are only four reasons to leave home. They are shopping for food and essential items, care and caregiving, daily exercise, and work/study - if you can't do it from home. No visitors are allowed at your home. You are only allowed to gather in public with one person from outside your household.

With a number of active cases in our community we urge everyone to take extra care. Follow the Stay at Home directions, maintain hand hygiene and physical distancing, and wear a face covering when you leave home (exemptions apply).

Stay home if you are unwell, and get tested if you have any symptoms of coronavirus by making an appointment with your local GP or go to a nearby testing centre in Bendigo, Kyneton or Maryborough. Please be kind and don’t forget to check on family, friends and neighbours. For more information call the coronavirus hotline on 1800 675 398 or visit www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus.

Look after yourself

We are living in a time that is full of uncertainty. There are small things that we can do to practice self-care to alleviate stress. These include taking a break from the news, staying active and connected to friends and family, eating well, getting enough sleep, and practicing meditation, mindfulness or yoga. Visit www.reachout.com for more ideas on ways to take care of yourself.

If you, or someone you know, are feeling anxious or stressed, support is available. Contact Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636 www.beyondblue.org.au; Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 www.kidshelpline.com.au; QLife 1800 184 527 www.qlife.org.au or Lifeline 13 11 14 www.lifeline.org.au.

Shop local

Council encourages community members to shop locally and help to keep local businesses afloat during these challenging times. Continue to practice measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 such as sanitising hands and maintaining physical distance from others.

Be kind to yourself and others and think locally before ordering online. Free floor stickers are available for local businesses to encourage social distancing in busy areas. Order via our COVID-19 support number on 1800 512 446.

Small business workshops

Small business operators are invited to attend a free workshop, Taking your business online. It will be held from 6.00pm to 8.00pm on Monday 17 August. Book at www.bit.ly/MtAlexBoxOffice.

Dog park to open soon

Well-behaved dogs and their owners are welcome to use the new off-leash dog park at Wesley Hill Recreation Reserve in Castlemaine once the space opens later this month. The area will be open for use during daylight hours, in accordance with Stage 3 COVID-19 restrictions. The dog park is located at the northern corner of the reserve, near the lower stadium carpark off McGrath Street.

Election candidate training

Are you interested in running as a candidate for the October council election? This year there is a new requirement that all candidates must complete Local Government Candidate Training before they are able to nominate. A link to the training will be available from www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/CouncilElections.

The Victorian Local Government Association is hosting a non-mandatory workshop for candidates, which will cover the roles and responsibilities of council and councillors, current issues facing local government, candidate information, and campaign tips and tools.
