Have a say on indoor stadiums

Mount Alexander Shire Council invites you to complete an online survey to provide feedback on how you use local indoor sports stadiums.

Council will use the survey results to inform a feasibility study into the use, demand and need for indoor sports stadiums in the shire.

The only Council-owned indoor stadium is the Castlemaine War Memorial Stadium at Wesley Hill built in the 1970s. There are two other stadiums in the shire – the newer single court stadiums at Castlemaine Secondary College and Harcourt Valley Primary School.

“The War Memorial Stadium has served the shire well for many years, but it’s now an old facility that is no longer compliant with modern facility standards,” said Cath Olive, Council’s Manager Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities.

“We’re very interested in how our community uses indoor sport stadiums – how often, at what times of the day, and feedback on elements such as activities undertaken, temperature control, kiosk facilities, change rooms, accessibility and parking,” said Ms Olive.

The feasibility study will help Council to understand the role of indoor stadium play for sport, active recreation, exhibitions and events.

“We need to take into account the future growth of our community and to assess the future demand for indoor sports such as gymnastics, badminton, basketball, futsal (indoor soccer), netball, table tennis, volleyball and emerging sports such as pickle ball,” said Ms Olive.

“We would love to hear from anyone who uses local indoor sports stadiums, including nearby centres in Bendigo, Maryborough and Kyneton,” said Ms Olive.

“We invite you to complete the online survey and help us to better understand how stadiums are used, what you love about them and things you’d like to see improved.”

Find the online survey on at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/HaveYourSay. It will close at 5.00pm on Sunday 23 August.

Council has met with current and potential indoor sports stadium users, schools, peak sporting bodies, neighbouring municipalities and funding bodies as part of the development of the feasibility study. It is being conducted by specialist sport and leisure planning consultant Otium Planning Group.
