Rate notices on the way

Pile of newspapers wrapped in string.

Mount Alexander Shire property owners should start receiving their 2020/2021 rate notices soon, with the first instalment due at the end of September.

Lisa Knight, Council’s Director Corporate and Community Services, said rates are an important income stream, enabling Council to deliver more than 100 services to the community.

“Council rates go towards the delivery of a range of local services like maternal and child health, home and community care, town planning, the library, and more,” said Ms Knight.

“We deliver programs to support the arts, business, tourism, youth development and community projects, and we also manage community assets such as recreation facilities, roads, bridges, footpaths, drains, parks, playgrounds and community buildings.”

“This is in addition to delivering a capital works program to the value of more than $11 million,” she said.

In 2020//2021 the average general rates income has risen by two per cent, in line with the Victorian Government’s Fair Go Rates System.

The rate notices will be mailed out with information on the annual budget, detail on how to read your rates notice, as well as a newsletter with information on a range of coronavirus (COVID-19) related support services available for individuals and businesses.

“It’s been a hard year for many due to COVID-19, so we are also sending out an information sheet with trusted supports and services that are available for anyone experiencing difficulties during this time,” said Ms Knight.

“I encourage anyone who is having difficulty paying their rates to contact Council to discuss payment options.”
