Young people aged 12-25 years are invited to ‘virtually’ drop into the Mondo Lounge Youth Space each Friday afternoon between 3.30pm to 6.00pm for a range of free, fun online activities.

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Council’s Mondo Lounge Youth Space has adapted its weekly face-to-face program to deliver a range of online-only activities, such as Netflix parties, yoga classes, hip-hop dance workshops and video-gaming sessions.

There’s also been some screen-free craft activities in the program mix, such as soap-making and baking to help keep kids connected.

Thirteen year-old Mondo Lounge participant Billy Lister said while he missed seeing his friends face-to-face, the online activities have helped him feel less isolated.

“I’m a very social person, so it’s been hard not being at school and being able to catch up with my friends,” said Billy.

“I like being part of the Mondo Lounge online groups because I get to talk to people, and try new things as well.

“I have done a few online yoga sessions, and watched TV shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Stranger Things ‘virtually’ via Zoom.

“I really like the craft boxes too.

“I’ve made soap, and also a chocolate hedgehog slice, which was really easy and yummy. I would recommend it,” he said.

Council’s Youth Activities Officer Jodie Hearn said the online activities offer young people a chance to stay social, while observing the current COVID-19 Stage 3 ‘Stay at Home’ restrictions.

“Young people are really feeling the impact of not being able to spend time with one another face-to-face,” said Ms Hearn.

“Our online Mondo Lounge sessions provide the opportunity to get together virtually, have some fun, and a distraction from what’s going on in the world at the moment.”

“We’re continuing the fun and free opportunities for young people, just in a different format – and we’re always welcoming of new faces,” she said.
