Mount Alexander Shire Council adopted several key documents earlier this month at its Special Council meeting following changes to the new Local Government Act 2020.

In March this year, the Victorian Government announced reforms to the existing Local Government Act 1989, to be implemented in four stages. The changes to the Act aim to improve local government democracy, accountability and council operations.

To meet the new requirements, Council updated policies and rules in consultation with the community. The policies were then considered and adopted at a Special Meeting of Council on Tuesday 1 September 2020.

The documents adopted include:

- Governance rules (incorporating the Election Period Policy).
- Public Transparency Policy.
- Community Asset Committees (Establishment and Delegation to CEO).
- Council Expenses Policy.
- Delegation from Council to CEO.

Mount Alexander Shire Council CEO Darren Fuzzard, said the updated policies and rules support Council’s commitment to transparency and good governance.

“The changes cover many areas of Council, including the ways in which we conduct meetings, elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, operate during an election period and support the community to participate in local government,” said Mr Fuzzard.

“They explain to our community how we make decisions, when and how they can be involved in our decision-making and what information we will make publicly available.”

“Council is very supportive of these reforms, and we are working to ensure that we are compliant with each of the changes as they occur, now and into the future,” said Mr Fuzzard.

The updated policies and plans are available to view or download on Council’s website, www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au
