Mount Alexander Shire Council will soon begin the first of a two-stage upgrade to Muckleford-Castlemaine Road to improve safety for road users.

The works include widening and renewing the seal, sealing the road’s shoulder, and improving drainage, signage and line marking.

The 1.7 kilometre stretch of road to be upgraded runs west from the Ashbys Track intersection.

Works are expected to begin in early October, with completion in late December, weather permitting.

The road will remain open, with traffic management in place for the majority of the works. Detours will be implemented at key stages of the project to help reduce construction times and maintain safety. Motorists can expect minor delays.

Access to properties will be maintained during the works.

Muckleford-Castlemaine Road provides an important connection for rural properties in Walmer and Muckleford North to Castlemaine. It is also a popular route for cyclists.

The project has been designed to minimise impact on native vegetation, and will require the removal of some roadside vegetation to ensure safety for road users. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has approved an Environmental Assessment for the project.

Council has engaged local contractor Leech Earthmoving Contracting to undertake the works.

A second stage of works will look to upgrade a further two kilometres of Muckleford-Castlemaine Road, ending west of the Creasys Road intersection. Stage 2 will be subject to a future funding allocation.
