Mount Alexander Shire residents are encouraged to participate in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count from 19 to 25 October.

The annual event presented by BirdLife Australia, an independent bird conservation organisation, aims to get as many people as possible to record the number and species of birds in locations all over Australia at the same time each year.

To participate, download the Aussie Bird Count app, choose a location, and record the number of birds, including the species of each bird, within a 20 minute timeframe.

Mount Alexander Shire Council's Manager Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, Cath Olive said the count was an all-ages activity that can be done anywhere, even in your backyard!

“The #AussieBirdCount is a great way to connect with the birds no matter where you happen to be.”

“Take time out and get involved in the count from your garden, a local park, bushland or on the street,” said Ms Olive.

“You can count as many times as you like over the week, but each count needs to be completed over a 20-minute period.”

“Last year budding citizen scientists counted over three million birds during the event,” said Ms Olive.

Data from the bird count will be used by BirdLife Australia to help them understand more about the birds in the region.

Local data will be shared with Council, who will distribute the results with the Mount Alexander Shire community via Council’s website.
