Are you passionate about social inclusion and celebrating our diverse community? Are you looking to help make your community a more inclusive place for LGBTIQ+ people?

People who live, work or play in the shire are encouraged to apply now to join the Mount Alexander LGBTIQ+ Steering Group (formerly the LGBTIQ+ Roundtable).

“The steering group plays an important role in providing guidance and information to Council on the issues facing the local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning and gender diverse (LGBTIQ+) community”, said LGBTIQ+ Steering Group member, Councillor Christine Henderson.

“The group has been up and running for three years and is working on a range of priorities to help make Mount Alexander Shire a more inclusive place for our LGBTIQ+ community.”

There are eight vacant positions and residents that identify as having a disability, as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, culturally and linguistically diverse, as well as young people and older people are strongly encouraged to consider putting themselves forward.

“We have such an engaged LGBTIQ+ community in Mount Alexander and we would love to see this steering group be fully reflective of the diversity of our entire LGBTIQ+ community,” said Cr Henderson.

Council is coordinating the steering group in partnership with Castlemaine Community House and CHIRP Community Health, and includes representatives from the local LGBTIQ+ community and local health organisations.

CHIRP Community Health’s LGBTIQA+ Engagement Officer and steering group member, Sherene Clow is also encouraging community members to come forward and join in.

“Diversity creates innovative responses, and the wider range of representation we have on the steering group the better,” said Sherene.

“The steering group is an important way to inform and shape service delivery by listening to those directly affected and working collaboratively with Council and community groups to meet their needs,” said Ms Clow.

“It would be great to have some new perspectives and fresh ideas to join us on our projects moving forward.”

Meetings of the LGBTIQ+ Steering Group occur bi-monthly, and are one hour in duration.
