Mount Alexander Shire is now in the Fire Danger Period. This means there are restrictions on the use of fire in the community to help reduce the risk of fires starting and spreading. Council has extended the due date for the second rates instalment for 2020/2021 until Friday 18 December due to a delay in the issue of rate reminder notices. The second instalment was initially due at the end of November. Council apologises for any inconvenience. Healthy Heart of Victoria (HHV) has launched a local bingo competition to help get residents active. Collect an Adventure Bingo booklet from the Castlemaine Library or Castlemaine Visitor Information Centre. For the chance to win a weekly prize all you have to do is collect a bingo booklet, head outdoors and find at least three featured items. Email your completed card to hhv@bendigo.vic.gov.au, or upload a photo of yourself at one of the sites and tag @Healthy Heart of Victoria on Facebook to enter a special photo prize draw. The competition will run until Sunday 13 December. Winners will be announced on the HHV Facebook page.

Council is encouraging the community to buy and shop local to help support local businesses and provide a much needed boost to economic recovery in the shire. Go Local First for Christmas presents and purchases this festive season. Consider a gift from a local small business, or voucher for local stores, eateries or activities. Small businesses contribute to around a third of our economic activity and are an important provider of local jobs. There are many ways you can support local businesses, producers, makers and traders.

Council-owned swimming pools in Castlemaine, Harcourt, Maldon and Newstead are now open for the 2020/2021 pool season. COVIDSafe restrictions are in place. For more information including operating hours, activities and entry and membership fees visit www.mountalexanderpools.com.au.

We will close our offices at 3.00pm on Thursday 24 December and reopen at 8.30am on Monday 4 January 2021. For emergencies regarding roads and drains, maternal and child health or stock and animal control (excluding wildlife) call 5471 1700 and follow the prompts.

Due to public holidays residents who normally have their bins collected on a Friday will have them collected the following day on Saturday 26 December (instead of Christmas Day) and Saturday 2 January 2021 (instead of New Years Day).

Council is tendering the design for a number of capital works projects around the shire, including:

• Pavement widening on Muckleford - Yapeen Road.
• Road sealing and drainage for Camp Street in Maldon, between Templeton and Reef streets.
• Road sealing and drainage for Montgomery Street in Castlemaine.
• Pedestrian crossing points and footpath for Walker Street in Castlemaine, between The Mill and Castlemaine Botanical Gardens.

Norwood Hill Recreation Reserve – Join a drop-in session to view a draft landscape plan for Norwood Hill Recreation Reserve and provide feedback to the team. The session will be held from 3.30pm to 5.30pm on Thursday 10 December at the reserve on Maclise Street in Castlemaine.

Campbells Creek Recreation Reserve – Provide your ideas to inform the development of a masterplan for the Campbells Creek Recreation Reserve. Join a drop-in session from 3.30pm to 5.30pm on Wednesday 9 December at the reserve.
