Mount Alexander Shire Council will soon install a new fence around the northern and eastern perimeter of Western Reserve, which is located in central Castlemaine.

The new post and rail mesh fence will run along Forest Street and Hargraves Street and will include several new and improved entry points.

“Along with improving safety, the new fence will better define the reserve, crossing points, and linkages to nearby walking and cycling trails along Forest Creek,” said Stewart Campbell, Council’s Coordinator Parks and Gardens.

Works will take around one week to complete and are planned to have minimal impact on access for user groups.

Bike hoops and new litter and recycling bins will be installed at the reserve in coming months.

The reserve, which is adjacent to the skate park, is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, and used by local sports and cricket clubs.

It is currently a home for the weekly farmers market and monthly artists markets and is a popular site for cultural events such as the Castlemaine State Festival and 2TheExtreme Cultural Youth Festival.

The $25,000 project is funded by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
