Australia Day – Survival Day

Everyone is invited to join a free community event in Victory Park and a virtual dawn smoking ceremony to acknowledge Australia Day - Survival Day in Mount Alexander Shire on Tuesday 26 January.

Attend the online dawn ceremony led by Dja Dja Wurrung Elder Uncle Rick Nelson from the peak of Leanganook (Mount Alexander) from 6.00am.

Then come and meet the Mount Alexander Shire Australia Day Award winners and welcome our newest Australian citizens at a family-friendly event from 10.00am to 12.00noon at Victory Park in Castlemaine.

There will be a Welcome to Country, music from the Castlemaine Highland Pipe Band and a free BBQ lunch by the Rotary Club of Castlemaine. Registration is required to ensure a COVIDSafe event. Book your free tickets at bit.ly/MtAlexBoxOffice or at the Visitor Information Centre in Mostyn Street in Castlemaine. The events will be live-streamed via Mount Alexander Shire Council’s YouTube channel.

Western Reserve fence replacement

Works will soon begin to replace the perimeter fence at Western Reserve in Castlemaine along Forest and Hargraves streets. The project will take around one week to complete, with minimal impact on user groups. The project is funded by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. Grants open soon

If you have a brilliant idea for an event or a community or creative project make sure you apply for the next round of Council grants. Our Community Grants and Get Lost Activation Grants will open from Monday 25 January until Monday 15 February. Events Grants will be open from Monday 15 February until Monday 8 March. Information sessions will be held on Friday 29 January. Sessions will be held from 10.00am to 12.00noon at the Maldon Community Centre, 6 Francis Street, and from 2.00pm to 4.00pm on Friday 29 January at the Ray Bradfield Room at Victory Park in Castlemaine. Bike workshops for year sevens

Council is partnering with Healthy Heart of Victoria and Bike Bendigo to deliver two bike workshops for students heading to high school. The workshops aim to encourage students to ride to school, build confidence and learn road rules. Sessions will be held from 10.00am to 2.00pm on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 January. Local skate competition

Skate park users of all ages are encouraged to get involved in a regional heat of the Australian Skate Park League series, which is a national grass-roots skateboard, scoot and BMX competition. The event will be held from 11.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday 23 January at Castlemaine Skate Park. Entry to the competition is free. Register via www.skateparkleagues.com. Free parkour workshops will also run throughout the day. COVIDSafe restrictions will be in place. The event is sponsored by Council, FReeZA and the Victorian Government, and organised by YMCA Action Sports, Skate Australia, Victorian Skateboarding League and BMX Victoria.

Slow down on Golden Point Road

A seasonal speed limit of 40 km/hr is in place along a section of Golden Point Road near Expedition Pass Reservoir. The speed limit is in place from December to April each year to help improve road safety.
